The old way, and the easier way
The usual advice for expats and visitors is to bookmark a handful of cinemas and check each one every week for an OV or OmU showing. That is slow, and it is easy to miss a one-off screening. What do OV and OmU mean?
German cinemas use a couple of labels to tell you how a film is presented:
- OV (Originalversion) is the original version, shown in its original language with no dubbing. For a Hollywood film that means the English soundtrack, usually without subtitles.
- OmU (Original mit Untertiteln) is the original version with subtitles, most often German ones, so you still hear the original audio.
For an English-language film, both mean you are hearing it in English rather than a German dub. On the films page you can see what is on without decoding each cinema's own listing.
Where to watch, neighbourhood by neighbourhood
Hamburg's English-friendly screens are spread across the city. Here are the areas to know, each linking to the cinema's page on our site.
City centre, Dammtor and St. Georg
- CinemaxX Dammtor is a large multiplex next to Dammtor station and the Planten un Blomen park, and a reliable spot for original-version releases.
- Metropolis Kino sits in the centre near the Gänsemarkt and leans towards classic and repertory programming.
- Savoy Filmtheater on Steindamm in St. Georg, a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof, shows films in their original English.
- Passage Kino is on the Mönckebergstraße shopping street in the heart of the city.
HafenCity and the harbour
- Kinopolis HafenCity on the Überseeboulevard is a modern multiplex in the redeveloped harbour district.
- ASTOR Film Lounge HafenCity by the Sandtorkai is a premium, comfortable cinema close to the waterfront.
Sternschanze and the Karolinenviertel
- 3001 Kino is an independent cinema tucked into the lively Schanzenviertel.
Altona and Ottensen
- Zeise Kinos occupies a former factory hall on Friedensallee in Ottensen.
- Studio-Kino on Bernstorffstraße is a small independent house on the edge of St. Pauli and Altona.
Grindel and the university quarter
- Abaton-Kino is a long-running independent cinema by Allende-Platz in the Grindel quarter near the university, and one of the city's steadier sources of English-language films.
Further out
